A $3 million brownstone in Brooklyn, bought with cash. Those lavish expenditures are now evidence in the high-stakes bank and tax fraud trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, which is set to begin with jury selection Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia ... The trial is the first arising from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe. It represents a major test not just for Manafort, who faces decades in prison on bank and tax fraud charges if convicted, but also for Mueller, whose ongoing probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election could lose credibility if jurors ultimately acquit Manafort.  President Trump repeatedly has called the Mueller probe a "witch hunt," and his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, has suggested the investigation is "rigged." Neither the Virginia trial nor Manafort's separate upcoming trial in Washington, D.C., directly relates to any alleged collusion between Trump officials and the Russian government, or purported Russian disinformation campaigns -- a fact that led to a tense courtroom showdown just months ago. Dershowitz: Mueller hoping Manafort will choose to testify against Trump rather than 'die in prison' PROSPECTS OF TRUMP-MUELLER INTERVIEW APPEAR SLIM: President Trump's legal team is becoming more and more convinced it should ignore questions by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani told FOX News' "Hannity" on Monday, saying it's "highly unlikely" they will meet again with prosecutors ... "Given the revelations of the last three or four weeks, we've gone further away from the idea of answering any questions from them," Giuliani told Sean Hannity. "We don't think they have a legitimate investigation." Giuliani's comments underscored the newly combative tenor of Trump's camp towards Mueller as Manafort's trial approached. The former New York City mayor, who previously claimed Mueller's team may have been trying to "frame" Trump, also laughed off a New York Times report that prosecutors were looking at Trump's tweets to build an obstruction-of-justice case against the president. I don't know if they're ready yet," Trump said, when asked at a White House press conference about a possible meeting with Rouhani. Trump said he would set "no preconditions," and, "If they want to meet, I'll meet, anytime they want." The president already has held summits with Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un.  U.S. Navy: No sign of Iranian harassment of American warships in 2018 GOLDEN STATE ON FIRE: A pair of wildfires that prompted evacuation orders for nearly 20,000 people barreled Monday toward small lake towns in Northern California as firefighters worked to contain multiple other blazes across the state ... Officials on Sunday ordered evacuations around twin fires in Mendocino and Lake counties, including from the 4,700-resident town of Lakeport, a popular destination for bass anglers and boaters on the shores of Clear Lake, about 120 miles north of San Francisco. The blazes have destroyed seven homes and threaten 10,000 others. So far, the flames have blackened more than 68,000 acres — well over 100 square miles — with minimal containment. Those fires were among 17 burning across the state, where fire crews were stretched to the limit.  Farther north, the wildfire in Redding, Calif. blaze is now believed to be the ninth most destructive in state history, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said. The blaze, which killed two firefighters and four civilians including two children, has now destroyed 818 homes and 311 outbuildings and damaged 165 homes, McLean said. More than 27,000 people remained evacuated from their homes although another 10,000 were allowed to return Monday as fire crews reinforced lines on the western end of the blaze. No other action was taken on this matter at today's board meeting," the company said in an statement.  The board met on Monday after a bombshell Ronan Farrow article in The New Yorker was published last week in which six women accused the longtime network exec of sexual harassment. 'TRUMP-DERANGED' MEDIA: President Trump ripped "haters in the dying newspaper industry" Sunday after the publisher of The New York Times criticized Trump's rhetoric as "not just divisive but increasingly dangerous" ... In a series of tweets, the president complained that the media had been "driven insane by their Trump Derangement Syndrome." "[Ninety percent] of media coverage of my Administration is negative, despite the tremendously positive results we are achieving, it's no surprise that confidence in the media is at an all time low!" Trump wrote. Trump posted the tweets a few hours after New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger detailed a July 20 meeting between himself and the president. Sulzberger said Trump's aides had initially requested the meeting not be made public, but added he decided to comment after Trump discussed it in another tweet earlier Sunday. Sulzberger said he told Trump that while the phrase "fake news" is untrue and harmful, "I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists 'the enemy of the people.'" Trump's labels, he said, were fueling the rise of threats against journalists. Still, in Redding, officials stuck a hopeful tone for the first time in days. "We're feeling a lot more optimistic today as we're starting to gain some ground rather than being in a defensive mode on this fire all the time," said Bret Gouvea, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's incident commander. Two arrested for alleged looting during California wildfires THE TRIAL OF PAUL MANAFORT: The trial of President Donald Trump's onetime campaign chairman Paul Manafort is expected to begin Tuesday and will focus on Manafort's business dealings and lifestyle, not Russian collusion allegations. But it will give a glimpse into Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation ...  Manafort's financial crimes trial, the first arising from Mueller's investigation, will center on his Ukrainian consulting work and only briefly touch on his involvement with the president's campaign. Kazianis: Let's offer North Korea a peace treaty officially ending the Korean War TRUMP PREDICTS 'BIG' GDP NUMBERS: The Commerce Department will release its first official estimate of second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth, a broad measure of the goods and services produced across the U.S. - and President Trump has predicted 'big numbers'... "Big numbers announced tomorrow; I don't know what they are, but I think they're going to be terrific," Trump said Thursday at a newly reopened U.S. Steel plant in the St. Louis-area town of Granite City, Ill. "Somebody actually predicted today, 5.3 [percent GDP growth] -- I don't think that's going to happen. If it has a 4 in front of it, we're gonna be happy. If it has a 3 -- 3.8, 3.9, 3.7, we're OK." Many economists also have predicted Friday's report will show robust growth. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told FOX Business that when the Commerce Department releases second-quarter GDP data, he expects the number could exceed 4 percent. "You're going to get a very good economic growth number tomorrow. Big," Kudlow said during an interview on "Varney & Co." on Thursday. The steady growth of the U.S. economy has been credited in part to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Developing now, Thursday, July 26, 2018 A group of House Republicans has introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen secretly recorded a conversation with CNN's Chris Cuomo and admitted to deciding, on his own, to pay porn star Stormy Daniels, according to one report   Secretary of State Mike Pompeo battled both Democratic and Republican lawmakers on Russia and NATO in a tense hearing Wednesday, insisting President Trump has been tougher on the Kremlin than previous administrations President Trump announced a 'new phase' in the relationship between the United States and European Union as both sides agreed to a cease-fire in a growing trade war The Trump administration faces a deadline Thursday to reunite migrant children with their families TUNE IN: Sean Hannity will talk to Roseanne Barr in an exclusive interview on 'Hannity' Thursday at 9 p.m. ET THE LEAD STORY - LAWMAKERS MOVE TO IMPEACH ROSENSTEIN - A group of 11 House Republicans introduced five articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday evening ... The filing accuses Rosenstein of intentionally withholding documents and information from Congress, failure to comply with congressional subpoenas and abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). It was not immediately clear whether the House of Representatives would consider the resolution before lawmakers begin the August recess Thursday afternoon. The House will reconvene Sept. 4.  The articles were introduced by Reps. Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Jim Jordan of Ohio, the chairman and a prominent member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus. In an exclusive interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle" on Wednesday night, Meadows said it would be possible to effect a so-called "privileged" resolution on impeaching Rosenstein as early as Thursday morning, which would require a vote within two days -- although the impending House recess would likely delay that vote unless it were held quickly. Both Meadows and Jordan told host Laura Ingraham the effort was long overdue. DiGenova on possible Rosenstein impeachment: 'He's getting what he deserves' 'Very probable' that Peter Strzok will be called for more testimony, Meadows says 'I DID IT ON MY OWN': Michael Cohen, President Trump's former lawyer, secretly recorded a conversation with CNN's Chris Cuomo and admitted in the tape to arranging—on his own — a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels in 2016, the Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. ... The recording — which is about two-hours long — included topics ranging from the alleged years-old Trump affair with the former porn star to the payment, the report said. The reported tape could potentially be used by the White House to distance Trump from the Daniels payment and damage Cohen's reputation. Cohen reportedly assured Cuomo that he was not taping their conversation, and put the phone in his desk drawer. Pompeo declared that the U.S. would never recognize the Kremlin's annexation of Crimea, and threatened "severe consequences" for any future meddling in America's elections.  Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., sharply criticized the Helsinki meeting at the opening of Wednesday's hearing, saying the White House has a "ready, fire, aim" approach and is "waking up every morning and making it up as they go." In a dramatic moment, Corker pressed Pompeo to explain what he characterized as Trump's "purposeful" efforts to sow misinformation and discord. Pompeo responded that Trump has had a direct role in the administration's aggressive actions against Russia, saying "this administration has been tougher than previous administrations" on Putin. As the secretary of state battled lawmakers, the Trump administration announced it was putting off a proposed follow-up fall summit between Trump and Putin until 2019. National security adviser John Bolton cited special counsel Robert Mueller's "witch hunt" investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election as the reason for the delay. Udall presses Pompeo on Trump taxes, business deals Charlie Gasparino: Making a new case for Trump's tax returns to be released AVERTING A TRADE WAR: President Trump announced that he has secured major trade concessions from European Union officials as part of an effort to head off a trade war between the U.S. and the E.U. ... After talks at the White House with E.U. officials, Trump announced in a joint Rose Garden appearance Wednesday with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that the delegation had agreed to increase imports of soybeans and liquefied natural gas. Both sides agreed to work toward the goal of "zero" tariffs and subsidies on non-auto industrial goods, and to "resolve" recent tariffs that both sides have imposed. Trump said officials are looking to reduce "bureaucratic obstacles," work toward reform of the World Trade Organization, and limit unfair market practices.   "We had a big day, very big," the president said. "We set out to launch a new phase of close friendship between the United States and the European Union, strong trade relationships where both of us will win." Juncker said that as long as negotiations are ongoing, "we will hold off on further tariffs and reassess existing tariffs on steel and aluminum."  Stock market jumps on U.S.-EU trade optimism Can a tariff-free world really work? Auto tariffs won't be imposed on European Union: Wilbur Ross 'I'M NOT A RACIST': Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has told members of Congress that the government is "on track" to meet Thursday's court-ordered deadline of reuniting hundreds of migrant children with their families, lawmakers who met privately with her told the Associated Press ... Nielsen's claim was greeted with open disbelief and anger, according to many of the roughly 20 members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — all Democrats — who attended. A federal judge has given the administration until Thursday to reunite 2,551 separated children age 5 and older. The Justice Department said in a court filing Monday that 1,187 children had been reunited with parents, sponsors and guardians by the Health and Human Services Department's Office of Refugee Resettlement. Still, the private, hourlong meeting seemed to achieve little toward dousing lawmakers' criticism of how children taken from their parents are being handled. Nielsen told the group, "I am not a racist," according to two lawmakers. One of them, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said she made the remark after he told her she worked for a "racist regime." In an interview with FOX News' Bret Baier on Tuesday, Nielsen said authorities were mainly concerned about the welfare of the migrant children and family reunions were "in part ... up to the parents." "We really want to protect the children," Nielsen added. "So, we don't want to cut corners. We want to make sure they're going with a parent. We want to make sure they're going with somebody that won't cause them any harm."
