Ralph Northam is pushing back against Republican accusations that he supports infanticide following backlash over his comments on a controversial new state abortion bill ... "Republicans in Virginia and across the country are trying to play politics with women's health, and that is exactly why these decisions belong between a woman and her physician -- not legislators, most of whom are men," Northam spokeswoman Ofirah Yheskel said in a statement. Northam appeared on a Washington radio station to discuss the Repeal Act, which seeks to repeal restrictions on third-trimester abortions. Virginia Democratic Del. Kathy Tran, one of the sponsors, sparked outrage from conservatives when she confirmed at a hearing that a woman about to give birth could still request an abortion under the new bill. When asked about Tran's comments, Northam, a former pediatric neurologist, said that third-trimester abortions are done in extreme cases where a fetus may be severely deformed or "not viable' with the consent of the mother and often multiple physicians. "So in this particular example if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen," he said. "The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother." The intent of Northam's comments was not clear. But some conservative commentators and lawmakers believed he was discussing the possibility of letting a newborn die and was possibly endorsing "infanticide." The proposed legislation in Virginia follows New York passing a bill last week loosening restrictions on abortion. New Mexico, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington state also have passed new laws expanding abortion access or moved to strip old laws from the books that limit abortions. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on the director of national intelligence and the FBI chief to intervene and tutor the president ...  Schumer, D-N.Y., called on Dan Coats, director of national intelligence, to stage an intervention with Trump after the president took the unusual move Wednesday of criticizing Coats, CIA Director Gina Haspel and FBI Director Christopher Wray after their Tuesday appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee. "President Trump's criticism of the testimony you and other intelligence leaders provided to Congress yesterday was extraordinarily inappropriate," Schumer wrote to Coats, adding later that "I believe it is incumbent on you, Director Wray and Director Haspel ... to impress upon him how critically important it is for him to join you and the leadership of our Intelligence Community in speaking with a unified and accurate voice about national security threats." But it was clear that Democrats and Republicans remain very divided over President Trump's long-promised border wall ... Both sides expressed optimism they could reach a deal that would stop the government from shutting down again Feb. 15. However, Democrats dismissed President Trump's call for a physical border wall and argued that smart border security technology would be more effective and cost-efficient. Republicans argued that a barrier on the U.S.-Mexico border is needed in some places and that smart technology alone does not stop anyone from crossing into the U.S. illegally. Trump: Negotiators wasting time without funding for wall POLAR VORTEX TURNS DEADLY: A University of Iowa student has died after being found unresponsive on campus grounds early Wednesday as a polar vortex gripped the Midwest in arctic temperatures that have been linked to at least seven other deaths ... Campus police found Gerald Belz, 18, was found behind an academic building on the Iowa City campus just before 3 a.m., KCRG-TV reported. Police haven't released a cause of death, but believe the frigid temperatures played a role, FOX28 Cedar Rapids reported. Meanwhile, an 82-year-old Illinois man was found dead outside several hours after he fell trying to get into his home, the Peoria Journal Star reported. His cause of death was recorded as related to cold exposure. In Indiana, a 22-year-old police officer and his wife were killed in a crash on an icy road, South Bend station WBND-TV reported. Ligonier police Officer Ethan Kiser's SUV spun into the path of another SUV, killing the couple and the driver of the other vehicle, 21-year-old Shawna Kiser, officials told the station. Other deaths included a man struck and killed by a snow plow in the Chicago area and a Milwaukee man found frozen to death in a garage. ATTACK ON 'EMPIRE' ACTOR PROBED: Chicago police released photos of "people of interest" Wednesday night in connection with the attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett ... Smollett, 36, told investigators he was brutally attacked early Tuesday by two unknown men who yelled out "racial and homophobic slurs." Police said earlier Wednesday that they reviewed hundreds of hours of footage from downtown surveillance cameras, but had yet to find footage of the attack. But hours later the Chicago P.D.'s chief communications officer, Anthony Guglielmi, released on Twitter two photos of those possibly connected to the beating. The photos appear to show two people, dressed in dark clothing, walking along a sidewalk next to a building. Kamala Harris, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez insists his party is united ... In an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier on "Special Report," Perez said there is "no philosophical debate" among Democrats that universal health care is necessary. However, he conceded there is no consensus on how to achieve that goal. "The Democratic primary will have a debate about how do we get from 90 percent coverage to 100 percent coverage," Perez said. "There are some who advocate for 'Medicare for All,' there are some who will advocate for a market-based approach." Perez's comments came one day after Sen. Harris, D-Calif., turned heads at a town hall event by embracing a "Medicare for All" plan that would eliminate not only the private health insurance industry, but also hospital waiting times. While freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., threw her support behind Harris' plan, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, a lifelong Democrat who is seriously considering running a run for president as an independent, called the proposal unrealistic and un-American. Some critics have warned that the emergence of Harris and Ocasio-Cortez shows that Democrats are shifting too far left and risk alienating moderates and independent voters. Many normal activities shut down and residents huddled inside as the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast plunging temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday from one of the coldest air masses in years. Tulsi Gabbard's 2020 presidential campaign is already in trouble, just days after the Hawaii Democrat formally announced her White House bid, according to a report ...  The congresswoman's campaign manager, Rania Batrice, and consulting firm, Revolution Messaging, are set to depart, Politico reported Tuesday. Gabbard will rely on her sister to fill the void, the report said. "Rania Batrice is a longtime adviser and friend and remains so," Erika Tsuji, a campaign spokeswoman, told the news outlet. Tsuji said Revolution Messaging was hired only for the launch portion of the campaign. In addition to losing Batrice, Gabbard is also under fire for a public feud with U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., raised eyebrows Monday at a town hall when she vowed to eliminate all private health care insurance for approximately 150 million Americans if she is elected president ... Asked by CNN host Jake Tapper if people who like their current health care insurance could keep it under her "Medicare for All" plan, Harris, D-Calif., indicated they could not -- but that, in turn, they would experience health care without any delays. Her statements appeared to be a full-throated call for single-payer health insurance, as opposed to merely expanding Medicare, and a dramatic embrace of the kind of proposals advocated by Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. Stone also believes Mueller's indictment was part of larger plan to charge both Trump and Vice President pence with Russian collusion and get them out of office. ""Look, I honestly believe that they're going to try to charge the president and the vice president with some hopped-up frame of Russian collusion," Stone said Monday night on "Hannity." Stone's allegations come as Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker announced Mueller's Russia investigation is "close to being completed." New details of 2016 meeting with Trump dossier author conflict with Dems' timeline Chris Christie rips Mueller's raid of Stone's home BOLTON'S NOTES CAUSE STIR: National Security Adviser John Bolton may have inadvertently revealed a potential next move by the Trump administration in the Venezuela crisis when photographers captured a note on a legal pad that read: "5,000 troops to Colombia"... Bolton was holding the legal pad in full view of the White House press corps while he and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced the imposition of sanctions on Venezuela's state-owned oil company PDVSA, a move aimed at increasing the pressure on disputed president Nicolas Maduro to step aside in favor of opposition leader Juan Guaido. Sources tell Fox News that the White House is considering pre-positioning U.S. forces in Venezuela's western neighbor in case they are needed. However, the sources said that no such move is imminent. DOJ CHARGES CHINESE TECH GIANT WITH FRAUD: China's government is calling on Washington to "stop the unreasonable crackdown" on Huawei after the Justice Department on Monday charged the tech giant with 13 felonies, including fraud ... The 13-count indictment against Huawei, the world's biggest supplier of network gear used by phone and internet companies, was unsealed Monday in New York. It charged Huawei, two of its affiliates and a top executive at the company, Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada last month and is facing extradition to the U.S. A formal extradition request is expected to be filed by Tuesday, according to acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker. The charges include bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. A separate case filed in Washington state charges Huawei with stealing trade secrets from T-Mobile. The indictments come as as trade talks between China and the U.S. are scheduled for this week. FIVE POLICE OFFICERS ON THE MEND: Five Houston police officers were shot Monday while serving a search warrant at the home of suspected drug dealers ... Two suspects were shot and killed in the exchange with police. Two officers remain in critical condition at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston with gunshot wounds to the neck. Developing now, Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 TRUMP MULLS THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY OPTION: President Trump is considering the option of declaring a national emergency to force the construction of his border wall and the partial government shutdown, a White House adviser told Fox News ... In an interview with Laura Ingraham on "The Ingraham Angle" Thursday night, Mercedes Schlapp, the White House director of strategic communications, said it is clear Congress will not come up with a solution to effectively address the illegal entry at the border and that the president is "seriously considering other options," which include declaring a national emergency. The White House has reportedly begun drafting a proclamation to declare the emergency and found the funds to construct the barrier. The move – all but certain to draw a legal fight -- could, in theory, allow the president to circumvent Congress and end the budget stalemate. Trump has said he wants $5.7 billion for the project. News of Trump's possible national emergency declaration comes as the Senate on Thursday rejected dueling Democratic and GOP proposals to end the ongoing partial government shutdown. The impasse, now entering its 35th day, is the longest in U.S. history, and approximately 800,000 federal workers on Friday will miss another paycheck. After the bills failed in the Senate, White House signaled that a "large down payment" on border wall funding would be enough to end the shutdown. They even suggested that Trump would request less than $5.7 billion for the wall. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has rejected any kind of funding for a wall, dismissed the proposal as a nonstarter. Pelosi has canceled Friday session of Congress and sent lawmakers home for a "three-day weekend," drawing outrage from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Still, the pressure on both parties will continue to mount as federal workers continue to go without pay. Government shutdown just managed to get 'real-er' U.S. ranchers near Mexico weigh in on border wall, shutdown talks CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP TRUMP ATTEMPTS TO CLARIFY ROSS' REMARKS: Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross sparked a firestorm Thursday when he suggested federal workers needing assistance for food during the partial government shutdown should take out a loan ... In an interview on CNBC, Ross, one of the richest people in Trump's Cabinet, was asked to comment on reports that some of the federal workers currently not receiving paychecks are going to homeless shelters to get food. "Well, I know they are and I don't really quite understand why," he said. "The obligations that they would undertake, say borrowing from a bank or a credit union, are in effect federally guaranteed. So the 30 days of pay that some people will be out — there's no real reason why they shouldn't be able to get a loan against it." Ross' comments were immediately criticized as insensitive. Trump attempted to clarify the remarks by telling reporters, "Local people know who they are when they go for groceries and everything else," the president told reporters. "I think what Wilbur was trying to say is that they will work along. I know banks are working along." Trump was alluding to several banks helping customers who are struggling financially as a result of the shutdown. JARRETT: EVIDENCE OF FBI, DOJ MISCONDUCT AGAINST TRUMP IS CLEAR - According to testimony in newly confirmed congressional transcripts, the chances of securing a 2016 surveillance warrant for Trump campaign aide Carter Page were only "50/50" without the controversial and discredited anti-Trump "dossier" ... The newly uncovered testimony, Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett says, proves that FBI and Justice Department officials abused their power in obtaining warrants and moving forward with an investigation of President Trump, conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In an op-ed on FoxNews.com, Jarrett writes: "The plain truth is that the spying on Page should never have occurred. Information gathered by the spying was eventually turned over to Mueller, who is investigating allegations that the Trump campaign -- or perhaps Trump himself -- may have worked with Russia to help Trump win the presidential election." DEMOCRATS FRET OVER VENEZUELA: Venezuela is in political chaos after opposition leader Juan Guaido temporarily assumed presidential powers in a bid to unseat dictator Nicolas Maduro, whose powerful loyalists went on the offensive Thursday in support of the embattled leader ...  President Trump on Wednesday announced the United States officially recognizes Guaidó as the country's interim president, escalating tension with Maduro. Guaido has disappeared from view since being sworn in before tens of thousands of cheering supporters to uphold the constitution and rid Venezuela of Maduro's dictatorship, and his whereabouts remained shrouded in mystery. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent and self-described Democratic socialist, acknowledged Thursday that the "economy is a disaster" in Venezuela -- but he cautioned against U.S. involvement in that county's affairs and condemned what he called "inappropriate" past interventions. Meanwhile, far-left Minnesota Democratic freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar tweeted Thursday, without evidence, that President Trump has personally engaged in "efforts to install a far right opposition [that] will only incite violence and further destabilize the region" and that "a US backed coup in Venezuela is not a solution to the dire issues they face."
